Themed Trains in Nevada: A Great Road Trip Excursion

photo-095We have enjoyed several of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad themed train trips during our past visits to the gorgeous Carson Valley and they have all been great road trip memories, especially the train excursions that go in to Virginia City for the day. But deciding to doing something totally different this time, we tried the “Toast of the Canyon” wine train.

Not exactly what we expected from a California wine train, it was still enjoyable taking a short, themed train ride through the serene high desert, past several historic mines and points of interest, and past beautiful wild mustangs.

This happy hour wine train excursion departed out of the Eastgate Depot as usual. But to be perfectly honest, we were left us a little surprised as only white wine was offered on this wine train.

This happy hour wine train excursion departed out of the Eastgate Depot as usual. But to be perfectly honest, we were left us a little surprised as only white wine was offered on this wine train.

Small half glasses were poured as thirsty onlookers begged for seconds. The harried servers did their best to keep up with the demand.

A further disappointment were the appetizers. The moment the servers walked on our car with the hors d’eourves, the smell of grease permeated the car which again displeased quite a few of the hungry passengers. The cold and greasy fried foods did not pair well with the white wine. We would have much preferred simple cheese and crackers or fruit and vegetables. Sadly, this was the consensus with those around us.

While most excursions we’ve taken on this charming and historic railroad have exceeded our expectations, this one did not. However the history and merriment on other themed rides offered by V&T are outstanding and a must do whenever you find yourself able to carve out a little time for a fun road trip excursion in the Carson Valley.
